How to get selected in a hiring clinic.
How to get selected in a hiring clinic.
The key
is to be better than everybody else..... above all, the clinic is a job interview, so no one is interested in how much of a dude you are. They are interested in whether you are good with customers both internal and external, if you can work as part of a team and if you can follow direction. So dress accordingly and leave the head phones at home.
•Thredbo will give preference to people with a qualification but not necessarily experience.
•hospitality experience is also a good thing.
• Grey hair is not a bad thing
•nose rings etc are not a good idea, they are looking for presentable people not fishing lures.
•they need full time, part time and holidays staff.
•make sure your equipment is in good condition and not from last century
•be punctual at all times. The job relies on instructors turning up on time for lessons. If you are late it will not help at all
be prepared as best you can
•learn the teaching progressions ASAP
•take notes on the hill by carrying a small note pad and pen
•do some home work at night by learning any new progressions and making lesson plans
•speak up and confidently when you present
•get involved when others are presenting
•ski in control, the selectors have seen lots of ugly skiing in their time, don’t try too hard and add to these bad memories
•your appearance is important
•Turn off your mobile phone
Getting in through the hiring clinic is getting tougher these days
In the 08 season only 24 jobs were given out in skiing and 12 in snowboard. Previous years pretty much everyone had a good chance, however times are changing for many reasons. In 2009 there were around 100 skiing applications for the hiring clinic, triple the previous years applications.
Candidates will have a lot of competition to contend with in 2010.
This year in Thredbo, as in some other resorts, there will be group interviews and a ski off on the first day.
SAD Skills Assessment Day is set up to find
•The most presentable people.
•Who can follow directions.
•The best presenters (if you can present anything to the group) the most original I saw in 2009 was how to play air guitar.
•Technical skiing or riding skills assessment.
This is to select only the strongest candidates for the clinic.
So be prepared beforehand, better yet, here is a shortcut into the industry
